Why does someone write a book about Tungsten? There are several reasons and precedents for this, the most important of which is that the last book on tungsten was written more than 20 years ago, in 1977, by St. W. H. Yih and Ch T. Wang. During the intervening period there have been many new scientific and technological developments and innovations, so it was not only our opinion but the view of many other members of the "tungsten family" that it was time to start writing a new book about tungsten. Preparations of the new book began in 1994. Further impetus to the project was provided by the realization that in spite of this new knowledge having been presented at seminars or published in the technical press, a general acknowledgement of it by the majority of technicians and scientists is still far from being realized. It is our hope that this book will significantly contribute to a broader acceptance of recent scientific and technological innovations.

Hydraulic structures and river works are essential for the development of countries. This is more significant in the millennium development goals owing to scarcity of water for the ever-increasing population of the world. The objective of this conference is to bring together researchers and practitioners to exchange views and experiences on hydraulics of structures associated with rivers and dams. It is further hoped and anticipated that this would lead to a state of the art of the current practice to improve design of hydraulicstructures especially in developing countries. Hydraulic researchers had been leading air-water flow studies until the mid-1950s. Since progresses have been dominated by multiphase flow experts despite the relevance of “white water” phenomena to hydraulic engineering. In this lecture the writer reviews the basic mechanisms of air entrainment: singular aeration and interfacial entrainment. The relevant instrumentation and data processing technique are detailed. Later recent progresses in unsteady flow measurements and in seawater are discussed.

The Concise Encyclopedia of Magnetic and Superconducting Materials combines in a single volume articles written by leading authorities in these fields, aiming at giving a complete cross-section of the science and technology of magnetic and superconducting materials. It is a successor of the Concise Encyclopedia of Magnetic and Superconducting Materials edited by Jan Evetts and published in 1992. In the present volume, the majority of articles deal with the advances of recent years, combining new developments in the field of magnetism and superconductivity with earlier articles describing the achievements reached in those topological areas that have kept their fires burning. Already many decades ago, physicists have abandoned the idea that the occurrence in the same material of localized magnetic moments and superconductivity is mutually exclusive. The advent of high-Tc superconductors in particular has shown that magnetism and superconductivity are intimately connected and theoretical and experimental studies of the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity have become an area of its own right. But it is not only the strong mutual interest of scientists working in the field of magnetic and superconducting materials that has made it desirable to combine both issues in a single volume. Also from the applications side there is an increasing overlap between superconductivity and magnetism, magnetic bearings based on high-Tc superconductors and superconducting permanent magnets being prominent examples. One can even go one step further and say that electrical conduction and magnetic polarization have increasingly become intertwined in many materials in recent years. The recognition that the magnetoresistive effect can advantageously be utilized in magnetic sensor and read head applications has led to a proliferation of research in this area, eventually culminating in the observation of the giant- and colossal magnetoresistance effects. New exciting phenomena have surfaced including spin-, charge- and orbital ordering in a variety of magnetic and superconducting materials.

The word Ebola conjures up horrific images of sickness and death. Movies and television shows have dramatized the deadly results of infection with the virus (Figure 1.1). In fact, the Ebola virus has become synonymous with a gruesome death. The body’s organs “liquefy,” patients succumb to a haze of fever and pain, internal and external bleeding causes oozing blood, and patients often die. Even people who are unfamiliar with infectious diseases have probably heard about the Ebola virus. Much like the Black Plague or AIDS, Ebola is a disease that has transcended medicine to become part of popular culture. And also like AIDS, the Ebola virus has captured the general public’s respect and instilled fear in a remarkably short period of time: Both diseases were discovered barely 30 years ago, and have already made their mark in the history books.
