Have you ever flown in an airplane through cloud? Beneath you the ground falls away as your plane climbs. Then, as you enter the base of the cloud, fragments of cloud begin to cover the ground, which disappears from view a few patches at a time until you lose sight of it altogether. Through the window you can see the wings and engines of the plane quite clearly, but beyond the wingtips there is simply a pale gray nothing. You are looking at the inside of the cloud, and if the cloud were on the ground and you were standing in it you would call it fog. Fog is nothing more than a cloud that touches the ground. Both are made from tiny droplets of water. These are so small you can breathe perfectly easily in the fog, inhaling the droplets and then breathing them out again. They are colorless, odorless, tasteless, and completely harmless. You are unaware of breathing them, but you know the air is full of water because it quickly wets your clothes and hair. In addition, of course, it obscures your view. If you are in the open countryside where there is no road or path to guide you, a fog can soon disorient you by hiding all the landmarks. It is easy to lose your way. |

The need for this book arose from my teaching, engineering, and research experience in the non-power aspects of nuclear technology. The lack of a comprehensive textbook in industrial applications of radiation frustrated my students, who had to resort to a multitude of textbooks and research publications to familiarize themselves with the fundamental and practical aspects of radiation technology. As an engineer, I had to acquire the design aspects of radiation devices by trial-and-error, and often by accidental reading of a precious publication. As a researcher and a supervisor of graduate students, I found that the needed literature was either hard to find, or too scattered and diverse. More than once, I discovered that what appeared to be an exciting new idea was an old concept that was tried a few decades earlier during the golden era of “Atom for Peace”. I am hoping, therefore, that this book will serve as a single comprehensive reference source in a growing field that I expect will continue to expand. |

What form should one use to enhance to the utmost the brilliance, harmony and depth of sound from a symphony orchestra? Is there perhaps an ideal form on acoustics grounds for a drama theatre for Shakespeare’s plays? Such questions must have inspired many of the more original solutions to the auditorium problem. A particularly appealing approach for instance, especially for those sensitive to the charms of classical architecture, is that certain ratios of proportion are propitious. The argument runs that since our ears appreciate harmony and harmony is based on simple proportions, so buildings to support harmony should likewise be built with favourable ratios of proportion. Sadly this charming argument is fallacious since the actual dimensions are also relevant. This means that a concert hall with preferred proportions would only be suitable for one musical key, a concert hall in C perhaps? However there is the further point that the dimensions of auditoria are in any case too large for such considerations to be significant; we can fortunately design halls for all keys. |
