Many individuals, associations, airlines, libraries, and aircraft manufacturers were contacted or visited in the process of assembling this encyclopedia, work on which began over a decade ago at approximately the same time as my The Airline Bibliography: The Salem College Guide to Sources in English. Indeed, citations, press releases, and photographs for both works were initially obtained simultaneously. Following completion of the publications guide, this project has occupied much of the author’s time ever since. Almost everyone contacted over the years has responded in a gracious manner. For example, over two hundred airlines (several, such as Aeromech Airlines and the first Pan American World Airways, being no longer extant) provided information and photographs—many of them several times. All of the major fixed- and rotary-wing trade associations have also contributed facts and figures, while aircraft manufacturers have offered technical insight and photographs. |

It explores developments in pertinent analytical technology and results of experimental studies on biological activity, toxicity, and tumorigenicity, including the inhibition of adverse biological activity of specific tobacco smoke component by another tobacco smoke component. The authors discuss the controversies over the extrapolation of the biological effect of a specific component administered individually by one route versus its biological effect when the component is in a highly complex mixture and is administered by a different route. They also cite studies in which cigarette design technologies were developed to control the per cigarette mainstream smoke yield of Federal Trade Commission-defined tar and one or more specific tobacco smoke components of concern. |

In the mid-1970s, we had no direct information about the internal rotation of the Sun. Little was known about the rotation of main-sequence stars of spectral type G and later, although it was already well established that the surface rotation rate of these stars decayed as the inverse square root of their age. We certainly had much more information about axial rotation in the upper-main-sequence stars, but the actual distribution of specific angular momentum within these stars was still largely unknown. On the theoretical side, important progress in the study of rotating stars had been made by direct numerical integration of the partial differential equations of stellar structure. However, because there was no clear expectation for the actual rotation law in an early-type star, the angular momentum distribution always had to be specified in an ad hoc manner. The presence of large-scale meridional currents in a stellar radiative zone was also a serious problem: All solutions presented to date had unwanted mathematical singularities at the boundaries, and the back reaction of these currents on the rotational motion had never been properly taken into account. As far as I remember, there was only one bright spot that was emerging from this rather gloomy picture of stellar rotation: The observed degree of synchronism and orbital circularization in the short-period close binaries appeared to be in reasonable agreement with the (then current) theoretical views on tidal interaction in close binary systems. The year was 1977 and, as I said, we did not realize that the tide was turning fast. |

Interest in the Earth’s climate is at an all–time high, due in large part to concerns that it may be changing to a degree that will soon adversely affect the habitability of the planet. This realization coincides with rapid improvements inthe tools needed to study and understand the physical processes that produce and maintain the climate, including remote–sensing instruments and observing platforms in space, and fast computers and sophisticated algorithms to analyse large amounts of data and to run advanced theoretical models. The radiation that reaches the Earth from the Sun and its interaction with the Earth’s atmosphere plays a critical role in determining the climatic conditions that prevail over the globe. The Earth’s surface–radiation budget drives the water content of the atmosphere and with it the dominant component of the natural greenhouse effect that serves to maintain the benign climate on our planet. Variations in the incoming solar radiation and in the composition andcloud content of the atmosphere and ice cover of the surface result in climatic variability on timescales of billions of years to less than a century. Recently, human activity has begun to modify the Earth’s climate, through emissions of greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide and methane, and of aerosols, that alter the radiative balance and generally warm the planet, but can also cool it depending on the exact circumstances. |

Major depression was meticulously described by Hippocrates nearly 2500 years ago. Acoustic microscopy enables you to image and measure the elastic properties of materials with the resolution of a good microscope. By using frequencies in microwave regime, it is possible to make the acoustic wavelength comparable with the wavelength of light, and hence to achieve a resolution comparable with an optical microscope. Solids can support both longitudinal and transverse acoustic waves. At surfaces a unique combination of the two known as Raleigh waves can propagate, and in many circumstances these dominate the contrast in acoustic microscopy. Following the invention of scanning probe microscopes, it is now possible to use an atomic force microscope to detect the acoustic vibration of a surface with resolution in the nanometre range, thus beating the diffraction limit by operating in the extreme near-field. This 2nd edition of Acoustic Microscopy has a major new chapter on the technique and applications of acoustically excited probe microscopy. |

Several years have passed since the publication of the first edition of the Dangerous Weather series of books. Much has happened during that time and my friends at Facts On File and I felt it would be appropriate to revise all of the books in the series in order to bring them up to date. As we began to prepare the new editions, it occurred to us that none of the books so much as mentioned climate change, yet in the minds of many people this is the single most important environmental issue of our time. Omitting the topic from a series of books about the atmosphere might make it seem that we were either ignorant or uncaring. First, though, we had to decide whether the subject would fit into the overall concept of the series. Is it “dangerous weather”? Obviously, it is “weather.” Is it dangerous? If some of the more alarming predictions were to come true, many people would be at risk. Sea levels might rise, causing flooding in coastal areas. Agricultural yields might decrease, causing food prices to rise. Some people would suffer, although the suffering would not be shared equally—it never is. So we decided that, yes, climate change can be considered dangerous. It is a suitable topic for a book on Dangerous Weather. |

Much has changed in psychopharmacology since the publication of the first edition of Essential Psychopharmacology four years ago. This second edition attempts to reflect the advances in neuroscience, in the understanding of psychiatric disorders, and in the dozens of new medications for psychiatric disorders that have dramatically advanced the field of psychopharmacology in this brief period of time. Thus, two chapters have been added, 11 of the 12 earlier chapters have been extensively revised, and the length of the written text has been increased by about 50%. What has not changed is the didactic style of the first edition, which continues in this edition and is largely based on updated lectures, slides, and articles of the author. Thus, new materials are presented, with an emphasis on color pictures, which have more than doubled in this edition to over 500 in total. |
