Nearly twenty years passed from the time of this book's first incarnation as a doctoral dissertation to its appearance in 1993. Were I faced with the task of writing The Cuban Revolution again, tabula rasa, I might approach it somewhat differently. Yet I take some satisfaction in the fact that I have had to make only minor changes in this edition to update the original content, while adding a new chapter to broach more fully the developments of the 1990s. In 1998, Madrid's Editorial Coli-bri published the updated book in Spanish. For me, Cuba has never been an emotionally neutral topic. I repeat what I expressed in the first preface: this work is more than a scholarly endeavor; it is a charge from the heart. Readers should know the wellspring of my voice: from the early 1970s until the late 1980s, I supported the Cuban Revolution.

This latest edition of The Presidents: A Reference History, coming only six years after the Second, is a tribute to its ever-enlarging role as a standard resource for students and the general public alike. This revision features important additions; they include an early assessment of President George W. Bush’s administration, already marked by unprecedented challenges to national security, and, of course a full account of President Bill Clinton’s two terms. One new essay views the history of the presidency as a whole, and another provides an authoritative history of the White House. The highly admired essay on First Ladies has been brought up to date as have the instructive Appendices: the General Bibliography on the Presidency, The Table of Presidential Data, and profile of The Executive Office of the President. All of the articles on the individual presidents were reviewed and revised where needed to accommodate fresh interpretations. Evaluations of recently published books update the bibliographies. Two full-color inserts vividly portray the social history of the presidency and election-related memorabilia, making more tangible how the U.S. Chief Executives are chosen and their daily life in office.

Everything is poison, there is poison in everything. Only the dose makes a thing not a poison.” This quote, attributed to Paracelsus, the Swiss physician and alchemist born in 1493 who has been called the father of toxicology, still rings true. It seems barely a day passes that we are not made aware of a new toxic substance that threatens our children or are informed by the media about the dangers of toxins found in our food, air, and water. Poisons and toxic substances are commonplace in everyday modern life. Yet poisons and other toxic substances have been a subject of fascination since ancient times. Archaeologists have found evidence that primitive humans used poisons with their hunting weapons to hasten the death of their prey. Humankind’s great interest in poisons eventually extended to ways they could be used against their own kind, and this use bred a great deal of fear, especially among people in positions of power who were afraid that poisons would be used against them. One such individual was Mithridates VI, a king of Pontus in ancient northern Turkey about 114 b.c. He was so paranoid about being poisoned that he dedicated much of his life to finding antidotes toknown toxic substances of his time. He left behinda wealth of notes about poisons and antidotes, including the 54 ingredients of an antidote he had concocted to ward off any attempts by his enemies to poison him.

The need for properties is ever increasing to make processes more economical. A good survey of the viscosity data, its critical evaluation and correlation would help design engineers, scientists and technologists in their areas of interest. This type of work assumes more importance as the amount of experimental work in collection and correlation of properties such as viscosity, thermal conductivity, heat capacities, etc has reduced drastically both at the industry, universities, and national laboratories. One of the co-authors, Professor Viswanath, co-authored a book jointly with Dr. Natarajan “Data Book on the Viscosity of Liquids” in 1989 which mainly presented collected and evaluated liquid viscosity data from the literature. Although it is one of its kinds in the field, Prof. Viswanath recognized that the design engineers, scientists and technologists should have a better understanding of theories, experimental procedures, and operational aspects of viscometers. Also, rarely the data are readily available at the conditions that are necessary for design of the equipment or for other calculations. Therefore, the data must be interpolated or extrapolated using the existing literature data and using appropriate correlations or models. We have tried to address these issues in this book. Although Prof. Viswanath had a vision of writing.

No one knows when typhoid fever first appeared. When Hippocrates described symptoms that included a fever, he was probably offering one of the first recorded descriptions of typhoid fever. When Emperor Augustus fell ill with typhoid fever, Roman physician Antonius Musa treated him with cold baths; this was the best treatment ancient doctors could provide without a more thorough understanding of this ailment. While Alexander the Great conquered the world, he, in turn, was probably conquered by an unseen microbe. Plutarch’s description of Alexander’s symptoms leaves little doubt that Alexander probably died of typhoid fever in A.D. 323.

Plasma, sometimes called the fourth state of matter, is a multifaceted substance which poses a variety of challenges. Plasma physics deals with the complex interaction of many charged particles with external or self-generated electromagnetic fields. It is this unique entanglement which makes plasma physics a fascinating field for basic research. At the same time, plasma plays an essential role in many applications, ranging, e.g., from advanced lighting devices and surface treatments for semiconductor applications or surface layer generation to the efforts to tame nuclear fusion as an energy source for our future harnessing the nuclear processes which fuel our sun.

Seven years have passed since the first edition of ‘Infection Control in the Intensive Care Unit’ was published. That book was a compilation of the lectures read at an intensive course on management of infection in the critically ill organised by Professor A.Gullo in Trieste, Italy, and has been completely rewritten by Italian, Spanish, South American, Dutch and Anglo-Canadian authors in this second edition. The book is up to date, with references to publications from 2004.We regard it as important that all statements are justified by the best available evidence. All authors have made efforts to avoid unsubstantiated expert opinion. Although prevention is not entirely separate from therapy, prevention rather than cure is pivotal in this publication.

A geomembrane is defined as a very low permeability synthetic or reinforced bituminous sheet placed in contact with soil. They are used extensively in transportation applications (tunnels), environmental applications (landfills, sand reservoirs) and geotechnical related applications (dams) in substitution or in addition to compacted clay, bentonite, concrete, steel and bituminous materials. They are used to contain or restrain gas and liquid movement. Geomembranes are manufactured in industrial plant and are polymeric and/or bituminous products shipped on site in rolls prior to being installed and seamed to obtain a continuous impermeable layer. Welding or adhesive techniques are used to bond the sheets together. In this book, in situ geomembranes are excluded. Historically, geomembranes were used in the 1930s while widespread adoption started in the 1940s. In 1987 more than 50 million m2 were installed worldwide and future growth of 20 to 25% per year is forecast for the next five years.

Permafrost Soils

Most of the Earth’s biosphere is characterized by low temperatures. Vast areas (>20%) of the soil ecosystem are permanently frozen or are unfrozen for only a few weeks in summer. Permafrost regions occur at high latitudes and also at high elevations; a significant part of the global permafrost area is represented by mountains. Permafrost soils are of global interest, since a significant increase in temperature is predicted for polar regions. Global warming will have a great impact on these soils, especially in northern regions, since they contain large amounts of organic carbon and act as carbon sinks, and a temperature increase will result in a release of carbon into the atmosphere. Additionally, the intensified release of the climaterelevant tracer gas methane represents a potential environmental harzard. Significant numbers of viable microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, phototrophic cyanobacteria and green algae, fungi and protozoa, are present in permafrost, and the characteristics of these microorganisms reflect the unique and extreme conditions of the permafrost environment. Remarkably, these microorganisms have been reported to be metabolically active at subzero temperatures, even down to 120°C. This book summarizes recent knowledge on various aspects of permafrost and permafrost-affected soils, including typical properties of these soils, distribution and biodiversity of permafrost microorganisms, examples for microbial activity in frozen soils, and genomic and proteomic insights into cold adaptation of permafrost bacteria. The impact of global warming on microbial communities, carbon dynamics, geomorphology, and frozen-ground engineering are further discussed. Other chapters describe the feasibility and limitations of methods for removing contaminants in frozen ground. Finally, terrestrial permafrost is considered as a model for extraterrestrial habitats. I wish to thank all authors
