Although engineering is a study entrenched firmly in belief of pragmatism, I have always believed its impact need not be limited to pragmatism. Pragmatism is not the boundaries that define engineering, just the (sometimes unforgiving) rules by which we sight our goals. This book studies two major problems of content-based video processing for a media-based technology: Video Object Plane (VOP) Extraction and Representation, in support of the MPEG-4 and MPEG-7 video standards, respectively. After reviewing relevant image and video processing techniques, we introduce the concept of Voronoi Ordered Spaces for both VOP extraction and representation to integrate shape information into low-level optimization algorithms and to derive robust shape descriptors, respectively. We implement a video object segmentation system with a novel surface optimization scheme that integrates Voronoi Ordered Spaces with existing techniques to balance visual information against predictions of models of a priori information.

Given the increasing incidence of microbial resistance to antibiotics, the failure to adequately treat certain diseases such as parasite infections, the resurgences of some bacteria that were thought to be eradicated in developed countries, and the magnificent progress recently made in glycobiology, the time has come to better adequately (re)address the issue of prophylactic treatments through vaccination programs. There was a time when killed or attenuated bacteria or viruses constituted the first vaccine generation. A partial understanding of how the immune system handles carbohydrate antigens has been the causative event that triggered the use of bacterial components such as capsular polysaccharide as one of the structural elements against which our bodies could mount potent humoral immune responses. These purified antigens represented vaccines pf the second generation.

The Second International Symposium on Three-Dimensional Electromagnetics was held at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, in 1999. This symposium honors the memory of Gerald W. Hohmann, late Professor of Geophysics at the University of Utah, and follows the highly successful First Symposium held in Ridgefield, CT, organized in 1995 by Schlumberger-Doll Research (M. Oristaglio and B. Spies, Eds.). Nearly 25 years ago, Jerry published a seminal paper on EM scattering from 3-D structures in the earth due to diverse sources using the integral equation method 1. This achievement and the considerable body of subsequent work largely inspired by it, have shown how unique the behavior of fully 3-D structures can be. Very sadly, Jerry died May 23, 1992, at the age of 51 from complications of a cancer. His career history is described further in the citation for Honorary Membership in the Society of Exploration Geophysicists.

When I wrote the preface to the first edition of this book over 10 years ago, I noted that the history of meteorology was littered with whitened bones of claims to have demonstrated the existence of reliable cycles in theweather. These failures had led many to conclude that the search for cycles is a pointless exercise. Not much has changed over the intervening years, but the pace of effort to provide better answers about the periodic behaviour of the climate has quickened. The reasons for what might be regarded a Sisyphean task are not hard to find. Now more than ever, we need to understand why the climate changes and to what extent human activities are producing effects which are comparable to or exceed the natural variability of the global climate.
