The field of medical toxicology can be simply divided into animal and human poisonings from animal, plant, or man-made sources. Even more precisely, toxinology is the study of poisoning and envenoming by biological organisms, and toxicology is the study of human poisoning from manmade sources. Living organisms, such as animals, plants, and fungi, produce biological toxins. Man-made toxins, or toxoids, are produced by controlled chemical reactions, often on an industrial scale, designed to produce novel pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, household cleansers, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other useful and necessary consumer and commercial products. Unfortunately, some biological toxins have already been developed, deployed, and used as bioterror weapons (e.g., ricin from the castor bean and Shiga toxin from Shigella bacteria). Other biological toxins, most notably Staphyloccal toxins A and B, botulinum toxins, and a variety of fungal mycotoxins, can be mass-produced by rogue nations for biological warfare and agricultural and antipersonnel terrorism. Many biological toxins, such as poison hemlock, pyrethrin, and red squill, and man-made toxoids, such as arsenic and thallium salts and pyrethroids, have long been used as pesticides, fungicides, and even as human poisons. Several types of poison gases, including both vesicant and neurotoxic agents, were intentionally released during World War I and in very recent wars (Iran-Iraq War) and terror attacks (Sarin nerve gas attacks in Japan). This book will serve as a visual and written reminder of the ubiquitous sources of toxins and toxoids in the environment and the outcomes of accidental or intentional toxic exposures in humans. |

Nowadays, propellants, explosives and pyrotechnics are composed mainly of particulate energetic materials. These are gaining in importance as a way to optimize the performance, burning behavior, stability, detonation properties, processing characteristics and, above all, the low sensitivity of these systems. By varying the characteristic profile of these materials, product design provides for particulate components specially optimized for the application in question. Well-known solid formation processes are often used to create particles of energetic materials, such as crystallization or precipitation, comminution or atomization. Although there is a certain amount of information available about these processes for particle syntheses or processing, there is currently a lack of detailed comprehension in some points, which is needed to be able to completely control the particle formation process or to make reliable predictions about the profile required by the user for the particles so created. Vital questions and tasks remaining for particle technology of energetic materials are the comprehensive characterization of particulate components, the experimental determination of the kinetics of particle formation processes, the influence of the manufacturing process on important particle characteristics, such as particle size distribution, morphology or polymorphy, the simulation and modeling of particle formation processes and particulate materials, as well as the creation of low-defect particles with regard to the sensitivity of propellants and explosives. This book is targeted at those working in industry, government or R&D, and involved in the fascinating field of energetic or other special materials. It will hopefully contribute to summarizing our current level of knowledge. |

This is the second edition of my book Galaxy Formation.Many people liked the first edition which appeared in 1998, just before the explosion of magnificent new data which have completely changed the face of astrophysical cosmology. Many of the agonies which had to be gone through in the first edition have disappeared and, to many people’s amazement, including mine, there is now a concordance model for cosmology, the cosmologist’s equivalent of the particle physicist’s standard model. Just like the standard model, however, the concordance model creates as many problems as it solves. This is not a cause for concern, but rather one for celebration because we are now able to ask much better and deeper questions than in the past. These questions indicate clearly the need for physics and astrophysics ‘Beyond the Concordance Model’. |

Wireless communication slowly is becoming reality. In a wireless world, a printer is installed automatically after it is turned on; keyboard and mouse cables no longer become hopelessly tangled; Palm Pilots and mobile telephones automatically synchronize and communicate. Providing this sort of seamless, wireless communication--at a low cost--is the goal of Bluetooth technology. Devices that support Bluetooth automatically communicate with one another when they come within a 30-foot range of each other. If devices are compatible and properly authenticated, they start communicating, up to a maximum bandwidth of 1 Mbps. Although Bluetooth has a relatively short range and limited bandwidth, it requires very little power and is theoretically inexpensive. This makes it the ideal technology for portable devices that run on batteries, as well as devices that don't require massive bandwidth. |
