Molecular Endocrinology and Regulation is a burgeoning field, having experienced a remarkable period of growth since the late 1960s. At that time, there was no field of Hormone Action. The prevailing view of how hormones worked ranged from effects on membrane transport of nutrients and precursors for RNA and protein synthesis, to effects on the translation of mRNA at the level of ribosomes. There was, however, a small cadre of voices that predicted a possible nuclear action on mRNA synthesis. The first such paper was presented at the national endocrine meetings in 1967 and dealt with hormonal stimulation of oviductal protein synthesis. It was about this time that a small group of scientists interested in hormone effects in cells attended a Gordon Conference in New Hampshire organized by Jim Florini; this meeting represented one of the first conferences to focus an entire program on hormone action and mechanisms.
