The Italian military aircraft which - during the 1911-12 Turkish-Italian war in Libya - marked the first operational use of heavier-than-air machines in war carried no national markings. In early 1913, possibly by a circular dated 29 April 1913, an heraldic device representing the reigning Savoia family's coat of arms - a black eagle, whose head always pointed to its left, with spread wings and Savoy's white-crossed red badge - was introduced for 'squadron' (ie, operational, as opposed to training) aircraft and was to be carried in colour on both sides of the rudder...
