Like its predecessor published in 1997, this book is a must-have for all Luftwaffe enthusiasts and modellers. This latest volume depicts 124 single-engine Luftwaffe fighters - Bf 109s, FW 190s, He 161s, Me 262s and even a Macchi 205 flown by JG 77! - in full color along with accompanying stories on the aircraft's pilot. Emphasis is given to early war aircraft (1939-1942) and rightly so since Luftwaffe camouflage and colors blossomed in that period. (Later war aircraft tended to be drab with few unit markings). Creating color artwork from mainly black and white photographs can open one up to criticism. However the authors make a strong case for the correctness of their artwork through opening chapters on Luftwaffe day fighter camouflage and markings and comments from Sundin. The resulting book is a feast for the eyes and great reading as well. Along with recreating several well-known schemes, they have unearthed new and interesting markings. The pilots covered range from well-known Experten like Gunther Rall to less well-known aces such as Rudi Artner. Lastly, since the profiles are chronologically arranged, one can also see the fascinating progression of Luftwaffe schemes from first to last.
