Such defensive measures had to be minimized because of the inherent disadvantages of airborne armament. Heavy armament and gunners decrease range, maneuverability and bomb load. The bomber goal was maximum range and bomb load, -»dth reasonable essentials in defensive firepower. Fighters, too, had the problem of balancing firepower, defensive armor, range and maneuverability.
