When it first appeared in 1933, the Polikarpov I-16 was the most modern fighter in the world, featuring a monocoque fuselage married to a low cantilever wing, retractable landing gear, and enclosed cockpit. Several thousand were subsequently built, and quickly became the Soviet Air Force's primary front-line fighter type. The aircraft saw combat in Spain, China, and Finland, but by the time Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941 the type was thoroughly obsolete. Losses were enormous, and continued to be so until the type was retired from front-line service in 1942. Hans-Heiri Stapfer, in his "Polikarpov Fighters in Action Pt II" takes a close look at this interesting fighter aircraft. He begins with the development of the TsKB-12 prototypes before moving on to production models. Models are differentiated and lots of photographs are provided, as are three-view line drawings, illustrations, and two pages of color prints. Combat histories are discussed including the experimental mating of I-16 fighters mounted under the wings of a Tupolev TB-3 bomber. In all, this is a good work on one of the most important Soviet fighters of the early war period.
