Astrochemistry as a subject has been rapidly evolving in recent years driven by theory and experimental results. It is a subject that encompasses chemistry, physics, astronomy and biology, and can be thought of as moving from the chemical make up of other atmospheres and space itself, through to the formation of organic life in the universe. It has moved very much from a subject portrayed in science fiction films to hard science. From a teaching point of view, it has the advantage of combining key elements of chemistry with physics and biology in an interesting and stimulating subject, much more appealing to the students than more traditional chemistry subjects. It could become the 'atmospheric chemistry' course of tomorrow.
Astrochemistry is a basic introduction to the chemistry and physics of atmospheres other than Earth's. It is based osecond year chemistry course and assumes some knowledge of physical and organic chemistry along with some basic physics. Little prior knowledge of biology or astrophysics is assumed. Starting with an introduction to the chemical universe, the text covers stellar, meteorite, comet and planetary chemistry, before covering prebiotic chemistry and life in the solar system. Results from the latest research have been included throughout.
